Kythnos, Cyclades
Kythnos is a magnificent island located just a breath away from Athens, offering a superb getaway destination from the bustling city, as well as a meeting-point for those who seek to find peace and relaxation in the limitless blue of the Aegean Sea. A short trip by boat will end in the port of Merihas, opening the door to the exploration of the island’s picturesque paths filled with the smells of basil and traditional treats. Well known for its innumerous gulfs, bays and unique beaches with crystalline waters, Kythnos is a real retreat for quiet and tranquil holidays in the mesmerizing complex of the Cyclades.
Travel to Kythnos
There are various ways to reach the island;
- By ferry from the port of Lavrion (1.5 hour)
- By ferry from the port of Piraeus (3 hours)
Kythnos is daily connected by ferry with Serifos, Sifnos, Milos and Kimolos. Twice a week there is ferry to Santorini, Sikinos and Folegandros, while three times a week there is ferry to Kea and Syros.
Transportation
Kythnos has a sufficiently developed road network that allows all means of transportation including buses, taxis, private vehicles and motorcycles.
The bus itineraries are daily, but not so frequent and follow two main roots that link the important centers of the island.
- Merihas - Chora – Loutra
- Merihas – Dryopida – Panagia Kanala
For those who prefer a more private way of getting around Kythnos, there are many car and motorcycle rentals in Chora and Merihas, while taxis are also available. Access to the remote and difficultly accessible beaches, is alternatively serviced by coastal means such as sea taxis.
KOLONA
Kolona is perhaps the most beautiful beach, not only of Kythnos, but probably of the whole Cyclades complex. A narrow stripe of sand finds itself dividing the sea and connecting Kythnos to the islet of Agios Loukas. The impressive beach offers an enticing experience, while lying in the beautifully shaped land formed in the middle of the sea. Kolona is located northern of Merichas port. It is accessible through a rocky road. However, the choice of a sea taxi is also available.
DRYOPIDA
Dryopida village finds itself in the middle of the island and in fact is the only location viewless by the sea. Located in a sheltered spot, between two hills, Dryopida is of exquisite architectural interest. The buildings of this, otherwise traditional Cycladic village, differ from the Aegean norm, composing a distinct image, stemming from the habitants’ inclination to ceramic arts. The unique village has been officially denounced as a ‘Traditional Settlement’. There you can also visit a small Byzantine Ecclesiastical museum, a folklore museum and the wondrous Katafyki cave. Wonder a little outside the village to discover the old deserted traditional windmills.
LOUTRA
The picturesque harbor of Loutra, on the northeastern side of the island, is a bay carved with history. A fishing village well known for its hot thermal springs, gave the second name ‘Thermia’ to the island of Kythnos. The traditional settlement is built around the moorage of Loutra, Agia Irini, Schinari and Maroulas. Only 10 minutes away from the Agios Sostis beach, is an excellent option for breakfast or dining in the traditional restaurants located on the sandy beach. Night strolls by the waves could be the perfect end for your day.
LEFKES
Lefkes is a small coastal settlement, located in the eastern edge of Kythnos. The main part of the village climbs upon the cliff, facing the beautiful bay. Lefkes is well known for the presence of the old Kythnos mines, first operating in 1873. The rusty remainings of the rusty infrastructure create a unique combination of industry and tradition by the soft Aegean blue.
AGIA IRINI
Agia Irini is undeniably the most picturesque corner of the island. You will find the settlement hiding near Loutra village. Authentic Aegean colour, whitewashed dwellings, scattered fishing boats and the beautifully made small church of Agia Irini, standing in the edge of the natural cliff, create an almost cinematic scenery of unique beauty. The old traditional café renovated into an exquisite restaurant is a place of true Cycladic hospitality offering tasteful treats.
PANAGIA KANALA
One of the most beautiful coastal settlements is that of Kanala, named after the homonymous religious protector of the island. Visit the pine filled cape, that hosts the glorious church with the impressive and tidy surroundings. In the August 15th a big traditional fest is held by the church. Don’t miss it!
CHORA
Just one stroll around Chora is never enough. This beautifull picturesque settlement is actually the seductive heart of the island. Brite white houses, flesh glazed paths, small squares, beautiful churches and a plethora of tiny shops, restaurants and bars offer a range day to night charms. Walk around the paths filled with the smells and colours of the Cycladic flowers that flourish upon the white roods. Taste the local treats and discover the white shed churches that prevail scattered around the idyllic scenery.
AGIOS SOSTIS
Agios Sostis is undeniably the island’s hidden treasure. Located in a secluded gulf in northern Kythnos, the charming beach offers a wind sheltered sanctuary, open to the crystal blue – turquoise waters of the Aegean. Covered in small peebles and soft sand, the bay creates an enchanting environment that welcomes the visitors to a relaxing paradise. Agios Sostis is named after the homonymous church built on the edge of the moorage.
WHAT TO DO
BRYOCASTRO
On the western shore of Kythnos one comes across the findings of the fortified city of Bryocastro, the ancient capital of the island. A wide range of temples, signs and other ruins, create a scenery of high interest for those who wish to learn about the island’s history. The magical meeting of past and present under the ever-lasting supervision of the sea, creates a unique environment worth visiting.
THERMAL SPRINGS
The village of Loutra hosts the island’s thermal springs. Well known for their therapeutic effects, the springs include a spa with private rooms and tubes. One can, also, swim in the beautiful natural pool of warm water, stemming from the hill springs. A wonderful experience for the body and mind.
KATAFYKI CAVES
On the edge of Dryopida village is the captivating Katafyki cave. Natural and artificial passages and openings create an enchanting scape, filled with stalactites and stalagmites. The cave tunnels, naturally formed by the water, shape a mysterious labyrinth, a magical scenery of chaos and absolutely form.
HIKING
If you seek for adventure and love the nature’s untouched corners, Kythnos offers a wide hiking network that spreads a real journey in time and space. The beautifully sculpted land anaglyph offers a plethora of paths that range in difficulty levels. From smooth rural paths to wild rocky passages and from secret entries to mystic bays, you can choose your own hiking route to the island’s treasures, that include archeological sites and outstanding observations. The summer heat might discourage long walks and hiking trips. Fall offers the optimum weather for your adventure.
FESTIVALS
Kythnos is an island of tradition. Local festivals related to religious customs and cultural events are held throughout the year, especially in the summer and during Easter. The celebrations include large feasts and dancing until early morning hours. There you can taste an abundance of traditional treats, blend with the locals and follow them in the ever growing dance circles. One of them is held in the small church of Agios Sostis, celebrated on the 7thof September. A range of cultural exhibitions and performances is linked to the Kythneia Festival, that is hosted every summer in Chora.
SCUBA DIVING
The sea and the seabed of Kythnos are of unique beauty. Strong currents and waves have sculpted the underwater landscape throughout the centuries, shaping incredible coastlines and amazing reefs. At the same time the wild waters are enriched with life and offer the divers a spectacular sight. Exploration of underwater caves, night diving under the old mine bridge and all day diving excursions are offered in the organized diving centre based in Loutra bay. Over thirty exquisite diving sites are proposed including the magnificent seabed of Agios Sostis.
